Feeding Manchester. Fighting food poverty. Improving Lives.
On Tuesday 14th May, nine incredible colleagues from across Casey joined Cracking Good Food’s Carnival Cook-Up at Freight Island, Manchester, a full-day volunteering event supporting people experiencing homelessness and food poverty across Greater Manchester.
This was our second Donated Day with Cracking Good Food, building on the success of our pilot event at Christmas. Once again, we’ve shown how powerful our Donated Days initiative can be when channelled into causes that directly reflect our company purpose of Improving Lives.
Led by our experienced chef Phil, together our 9-person Casey team:
-
Prepared, cooked, packaged, and labelled 257 meals – contributing to a remarkable 1,706 meals made on the day.
-
Worked shoulder to shoulder with other volunteers in a professional kitchen environment.
-
Brought energy, structure, and professionalism from start to finish.
- Represented Casey with pride, purpose, and compassion.

As part of the day’s efforts, the Casey team were tasked with preparing a hearty Lentil Bolognese, a delicious and sustainable plant-based recipe designed with zero-waste principles in mind. Under expert guidance from the Cracking Good Food team, we learnt how to make the most of every ingredient, using whole vegetables including often-discarded parts like carrot tops. This hands-on cooking experience wasn’t just about volume; it was about food intelligence, understanding how to layer flavours, combine spices, and maximise nutritional value while minimising waste. Our host took the time to explain each ingredient and its role in the dish, creating an engaging learning environment that blended sustainability, skill-building, and community impact.
Once made and packaged, the meals were then distributed by community partner Fareshare that evening to individuals and families experiencing food insecurity throughout Greater Manchester.
A Shout-Out to Team Casey
From the outset, our team were organised, efficient, and slick, showcasing the very best of Team Casey. Whether chopping, cooking, packaging, or labelling, every member gave it their all and played a vital role in this fast-paced, high-impact event.
We were even joined on the day by Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, who stopped by to witness the community spirit in action. Andy took the time to speak to our team, and posed for a fantastic photo for us.
