Completion of the Swinton Greenway Project & Giving Back to the Community
In August 2022, the Swinton Greenway project, delivered on behalf of Salford City Council, was successfully handed over for community use. The scheme involved construction of a new 7km off-road path which runs from Monton to Swinton. The route has been significantly upgraded to make it more attractive, safer and accessible for all, whether it’s for cyclists, commuters, dog walkers or wheelchair users.
Upgrades included widening the route up to 3.5m for 5km of the path to allow more users than before, new motion-detection sensor lighting to ensure trips are well lit, all year round, and the route now offers over 30 different entrances to open it up and connect it to more communities living nearby.
Works also involved junction realignments to the nearby highway routes to accommodate new cycleway access points, associated site clearance works together with works to existing bridges, tunnels, culverts and installation of new feature entrances and access barriers. Highway works involved improving and realigning road junctions and crossings with drainage and infrastructure upgrades including replacement culverts and installation of new soakaways.

Highway works involved improving and realigning road junctions and crossings with drainage and infrastructure upgrades including replacement culverts and installation of new soakaways.
The new footpath was complimented with installation of new fencing and soft landscaping along the routes. On road cycleways were also designated in the standard dimensions with signage erected along each route. Works also included the installation of street lighting, signage and furniture comprising litter bins, seating and cycle stands.
To uphold our commitment to “Improving Lives” on the project and to give back to the local community, we provided a kiosk on the route which can be used by a local community group as a refreshment kiosk in order to generate an income. This adds to the sustainability of the scheme and gives back to the local community.
We also arranged a “Dragons Den” style event at a local school where students presented ideas for a creative project with the theme of ‘leaving a local legacy’. The winners of the event have been provided with the opportunity to bring their design to life and incorporate it into the finished scheme. It is the intention that through their involvement this will inspire local young people to use and be proud of the scheme for years to come.
